OVERALL BEST – CHIU CHOW CHILI OIL

If you’re looking for an inexpensive but extremely tasty chili oil that you can find in Chinese grocery stores (or Amazon).

This is the one for you.

Runner Up – Fly By Jing Sichuan Chili Crisp

If there’s one takeaway, it’s that Fly By Jing Sichuan Chili Crisp is extremely versatile.

The umami flavor really comes through on this one, and if there’s another chili crisp/oil that you can put on everything, it’s this one.

For the Spicy Lovers – Boon Sauce

The special thing about Boon Sauce is that it’s always changing. Depending on which batch you buy, it may taste completely different.  

It’s produced in small batches and the spice level will change with each batch. 

The Chili Oil Gang recently purchased batch #29 and it was very spicy but in a pleasant way. 

Highlights:

  • Very spicy but not overly spicy and still flavorful
  • Tastes great on noodles, congee, dumplings, rice and more
  • A little goes a long way
  • Always changing

You May Not Like It If…

  • You can’t handle anything on bordering on ‘super’ spicy
  • You’re looking for a chili oil or crisp that is on the cheaper side
  • You don’t like anchovies or anchovy flavor

‘Smooth’ Winner – Tze Daddy

Tze Daddy is different in that it is between a ‘paste’ and an ‘oil’ which give is a very smooth texture. 

It’s very flavorful, slightly sweet with a nice balance of spicy and savory.

If you’ve had hot pot before, you’ll definitely want to get this one for your next hot pot night.

  • Nice balance of spicy and savory
